RESCO PRESENTS:  "BITS"   March 21st , Phoenix Club, Anaheim

We are pleased to have the following speakers at RESCO's annual spring "Back in the Saddle" pilot refresher:

Mike Koerner:  ("Extreme Soaring From CA")  Diamond Pilot is an understatement.  Mike is the past winner of the Barringer Trophy for the longest U.S. Straight Distance flight, and the holder of  the U.S. record for straight distance to a goal (903 sm from Cal City to Seminole, Texas). Among many other things, Mike will give this advice: "Start early, finish late, go far."

Reuben Garcia: ("Do It Yourself Composite Repairs - It's Not a Boat!")  Reuben is an A.I. and an owner of Composite Technologies located at the California City airport, where he specializes in sailplane repair.  He will discuss maintenance techniques for glider owners.

Jim Norris: ("Contests Without Confusion")  Jim is the 2003 Region 12 Champion, the Chair of the SSA National Competition Site Selection Committee, the Region 12 Governor for Racing issues, and a Ventus 2ax driver.  He will give advice to current and prospective racing pilots.

Peter Kovari/Doug Easton: ("Land Out Tour: Avoid Angry Wives and Crew")  Peter (Libelle 201) has compiled a "AAA" road guide to land out sites in the directions of Bishop, Las Vegas, and Arizona.  This makes it easy for pilots to visit potential landing places by car before they have to land there, and helps crews find the sites when needed.  Peter's wife Teri helped motivate this project.  Doug Easton (DG-800B motorglider, Cessna Skylane) will present a video of aerial approaches to numerous popular land out sites located along Peter's routes.

Cast of Five: ("Scared Witless - What NOT to do")  Show up to find out which brave souls bare all to describe experiences and situations in sailplanes they would rather not repeat.  Last names just might include Brickner, Knapp, Skydell, Wayt and Warshaw.  Learn from your friends.

Advocacy:  Now that SSA has successfully resolved the Camp David P-40 Restricted Area issue with the U.S. Secret Service, attention is now being directed to resolving a similar problem (P-49) over Texas.

Competition Soaring: National competition sites were approved for 2005, and some changes regarding U.S. team pilot selection were made. The U.S. Team committee has developed an extremely impressive Policy and Procedures manual to guide team activity.

FAI Badge and Record Program: The badge program suffered a decline in activity of 37% in 2003 as compared to the prior year, however record processing increased 56%. An initiative is currently underway to streamline and ease badge processing.

SSA Foundation:  Tasked with overseeing a roughly $1 million fund, the SSA Foundation has begun a major overhaul of fundraising activities,  A new endowment campaign entitled "The Perpetual Gift of Soaring" is being led by Al Gold (previously a fundraiser for Harvard University) and Director at Large Larry Tuohino.  Donations to the SSA Annual Eagle Fund Drive in 2003 totaled $56,125, far surpassing the goal of $36,000.

Codes of Conduct:  Codes governing the behavior of both SSA officers and board members, as well as employees and contractors were ratified by the board.

A full report of activities carried out at this board meeting will soon be posted on the
http://wwww.socalsoaring.com website by Cindy Brickner.  As always, we solicit your comments and interaction.  Reach me at skydell@comcast.net or 310-202-6443.  Cindy can be reached at cindyask@postoffice.ccis.com or 760-373-1019.

REGION 12   "BETTER GOOD THAN LUCKY"   SAFETY PROGRAM

Totally Anonymous, Voluntary Glider Incident and Accident Reporting Form

Such events may have actually caused damage or injury, or simply represented something you plan on never doing or having happen again ("you won't believe how stupid I was...").  This program will hopefully allow the reporting of "misadventures" without fear of reprisal or recrimination, and by so doing, help every one of us learn from the mistakes of others.  Watch for commentary and analysis of these reports written by noted soaring experts in Southern California Soaring, the newsletter of the Region 12 Soaring Council, available on line at http://www.socalsoaring.com.

www.agcsc.org or leave a phone message at: (619) 338-1638.  For excellent videos of soaring at Torrey, see http://www.agcsc.org/video/video.htm.
