Region 12 Annual Awards Event:

This Year It's a Sunday Luncheon and Town Meeting

In an effort to keep things interesting, our traditional annual awards event will be held as a luncheon on Sunday, November 7, at the Proud Bird Restaurant near LAX.
The Proud Bird features a collection of (mostly WW II) aircraft on display outside, and is filled with aviation memorabilia inside.   Our RESCO dinner took place at this restaurant roughly six years ago, and received great reviews from attendees.  The Proud Bird is easy to reach from the 405 Freeway, and is located at 11022 Aviation Blvd, Los Angeles.
Socializing begins at 11 am, with a no-host bar.  Buffet Lunch will begin at noon, and includes top sirloin and chicken.  All Silver, Gold, and Diamond Badge recipients will be honored, along with record setters, 1000K Diplomes, and contest winners.  Special awards will also be presented, and our regional "SSIG's"  (Soaring Special Interest Groups) will present their activities and accomplishments over the past year.
Following the meal, our guest speaker will be SSA Executive Director Dennis Wright. His talk is entitled "SSA: That was Then, This is Now."  After holding his position for just over one year, Dennis has some very interesting insights, opinions, and attitudes about our society, and he enjoys sharing them.  He has already traveled the country like no other past leader of the SSA, visiting regional glider organizations and getting to know SSA members.  A long - time power pilot, Dennis learned to soar shortly after being hired by the SSA, and recently flew a 1-26 for the first time.  He is about as rabid a glider pilot as one can find. Time will be reserved for questions and answers after his talk.
Last year's Awards Banquet was attended by nearly 150 people.  This event is our best opportunity to socialize with old friends, and make new ones.  Take advantage of this opportunity to get to know Dennis Wright, and let him know how you think the SSA is doing.
Cost of the Luncheon is $35.00 per person.  Checks payable to RESCO must be received before November 1 at RESCO, 26500 W. Agoura Rd, Suite 102-726, Calabasas, CA 91302-2969.  Call Dave Romer, 818-516-0942 with questions.

Soaring at the Miramar Airshow

This year's Miramar Airshow will feature static displays of a glider and a motorglider, as well as glider acrobatic performances by Bret Willat.   The show is on October 15th, 16th, and 17th.  The show also will feature the Blue Angels, which should guarantee a big turnout.
Want to discuss soaring with aviation enthusiasts, while watching a great airshow? To volunteer, please contact Rob Morgan at 858-385-7833 (evenings), or at LS484@aol.com.  For further information about the show, see http://www.miramarairshow.com.

California City Contest Results:

Thanks to all of our contributors! Southern California Soaring is possible only because of your efforts.

OLC Contest Standings

On July 5th, Skid Row's Doug Levy took over first place in the United States OnLine Contest competition.  At the beginning of September, he has 5423 points, or 10% more than the second place pilot (Region 11's Ramy Yanetz).   Other Region 12 pilots in the top 20 are Erik Larsen (5th), Garry Dickson (7th), Mike Wills (12th), Garret Willat (14th), Jim Payne (15th), Mark Navarre (17th), and Marty Eiler (18th).
Warner Springs Soaring is the second place club in the national standings.  The third place club is the 1-26 Association which - while not a Region 12 group - owes its standing largely to the efforts of the Warner Springs Skid Row pilots.  Other active groups are Caracole (5th), Soarfari (11th), Lake Elsinore (20th), and Hole in the Wall (21st).
     Region 12 pilots with flights over 750K are Russ Owens (1048K and 926K), Erik Larsen (1021K, 907K, 902K, 895K, 855K, and 809K), Garret Willat (1000K, 979K and 798K), Marty Eiler (948K and 839K), Dan Gonzales (897K), Jim Payne (873K, 837K, 787K, 776K,  and 775K), Mark Navarre (855K), Robert Hunter (839K), Don Finnell (799K), Dan Ladd (792K), and Doug Turner (785K).  Four Region 12 1-26 pilots have 500K flights - Garry Dickson (651K and 536K), Doug Levy (625K, 569K, 555K, 537K, 530K, and 518K), Joedy Gregory (609K), and Mike Wills (527K).
Congratulations to all of the Region 12 pilots who are participating in the OLC.  We encourage more Region 12 pilots to participate in this challenging and fun contest.
